  • The enemy’s enemy : Feminism at the crossroads of neoliberal co-optation and anti-gender conservatism
  • 2023
  • In: Journal of Political Ideologies. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1356-9317 .- 1469-9613. ; 28:1, s. 62-82
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Contemporary left-wing feminist and queer politics finds itself in a double-bind between on the one hand neoliberal and corporate embracement of gender equality and sexual diversity, and (neo)conservative anti-gender mobilization on the other. In anti-gender discourse, feminist and queer politics is commonly seen to be backed up and disseminated by global corporations. Thus, in a time when nationalist ultra-conservative movements are increasingly challenging neoliberal hegemony and political and economic elites, there is a need for progressive movements on the left to understand specifically how anti-gender rhetoric is underpinned by a critique of corporate power. Through empirical analysis of the Canadian-based web-portal LifeSite, this article examines the ideological ‘grip’ of anti-establishment anti-gender discourse as well as the weakest points in its critique of market capitalism and corporate power in order to identify entry points for their politically effective contestation.

  • The surrogacy question, unresolved : Surrogacy policy debate as a hegemonic struggle over rights
  • 2023
  • In: Critical Policy Studies. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1946-0171 .- 1946-018X. ; 17:3, s. 372-389
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Sweden is often described as a ‘moderate’ country when it comes to legislation and policy on assisted reproductive technologies, being relatively permissive with regards to their use, but only permitting them within a strictly regulated framework. The ‘surrogacy question’, however, remains a polarized issue in media debates and has become a key topic of public negotiation and contestation around the meaning of a range of rights. This article investigates how surrogacy became a topic for policy debate in Swedish opinion journalism between 2009 and 2019. Drawing on discourse theory, the article investigates which, and ‘whose’, rights are mobilized in the debate, as well as how these rights are differently articulated and ‘filled with meaning’. It argues that polarized discourse coalitions are formed across the political spectrum, and that the absence of explicit legislation on surrogacy has led to a pragmatic ‘split policy’ which keeps both opponents and proponents unsatisfied, keeping the debate alive.

  • Las mujeres como «el pueblo» : Reflexiones sobre las protestas negras como contrapeso al populismo autoritario desde una perspectiva transnacional
  • 2020
  • In: Polémicas Feministas. - : Feminismos, Género y Sexualidades. - 2591-3611. ; :4, s. 1-22
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • Surrogacy relationships : A critical interpretative review
  • 2020
  • In: Upsala Journal of Medical Sciences. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0300-9734 .- 2000-1967. ; 125:2, s. 183-191
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Based on a critical interpretative review of existing qualitative research investigating accounts of ‘lived experience’ of surrogates and intended parents from a relational perspective, this article proposes a typology of surrogacy arrangements. The review is based on the analysis of 39 articles, which belong to a range of different disciplines (mostly sociology, social psychology, anthropology, ethnology, and gender studies). The number of interviews in each study range from as few as seven to over one hundred. Countries covered include Australia, Canada, Greece, India, Iran, Israel, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Russia, Sweden, UK, Ukraine, and the USA. Most studies focus only on surrogacy practices in one country (although often with intended parents from other countries), and some include several countries (e.g. interviewees from several countries or fieldwork in different field-sites). The proposed typology goes beyond the division between altruistic versus commercial, and traditional versus gestational surrogacy, in order to inform further research and to contribute to bioethical and policy debates on surrogacy in a transnational context. Four types of relations are identifiable: open, restricted, structured, and enmeshed. The criteria which influence these relationships are: the frequency and character of contact pre- and post-birth; expectations of both parties; the type of exchange involved in surrogacy arrangements; and cultural, legal, and economic contexts. The theoretical contribution of the article is to further the development of a relational justice approach to surrogacy.
